World is moving towards Wireless system. If your home is quite big, you can use wireless home intercom system.

Major advantage - It does not require dedicated wiring. Hence no wire break problems. As the wireless systems are getting cheaper, it is better to use these systems as part of Home security. The main leaders are Westinghouse & Novi.

You get range of around 300 meters. I think that is very good for Home application.
